Think Google and you think cutting-edge technological innovation. Their focus on science and technology led them to consider how they might support the next generation of innovators through an online science competition, and in 2010 they approached EdComs to conduct research to test this idea with teachers around the world and help them shape the concept.
Run annually since then, the Google Science Fair is a global, online competition that encourages students between the ages of 13 to 18 to perform science experiments or create engineering projects to compete for prizes, scholarships and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
What we’ve done
We designed and have managed the judging for the competition ever since launch in 2011. The system allows judges from all disciplines, recruited by us, to assess thousands of entries in 15 languages. Each year we moderate the final judging session of the top 15 entries at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California, wrangling a panel of illustrious judges from around the world who have included Nobel Prize winners and one of the founding fathers of the internet and chief internet evangelist at Google, Vint Cerf.
We advise Google on how to reach students, teachers and educational organisations to promote the Fair and support entrants via an online forum and live Google Hangouts, which also build ‘buzz’ around the competition.
